About

A Hub For Archaeological Research & Stewardship
At Sustainable Archaeology McMaster, we are committed to preserving Ontario’s archaeological heritage through innovative research, ethical collections management, and community collaboration.
As part of a provincial initiative, we provide a repository and research space for archaeological collections, ensuring long-term accessibility for descendant communities, scholars, and heritage professionals.
Advancing Archaeological Research & Collections Accessibility
Since its establishment, Sustainable Archaeology McMaster has focused on materials analysis, including petrography, biogeochemical studies, zooarchaeology, and geoarchaeology. These resources help researchers investigate past landscapes, cultural traditions, and technological innovations.
Our facility also works to address Ontario’s collections crisis, ensuring legacy collections and newly excavated materials are properly curated, accessible, and cared for according to ethical research standards.
Partnering With Indigenous & Descendant Communities
Collaborating with Indigenous communities and descendant groups is central to our mission. We support community-led archaeology, repatriation efforts, and stewardship models that prioritize the voices of those connected to Ontario’s archaeological past.
By reshaping research practices, we aim to create an inclusive framework for archaeological inquiry and collections management.
Accessing Collections & Research Facilities
Sustainable Archaeology McMaster provides collections access and research space for consultants, scholars, and community members.
Whether through collections transfers, archaeological research, or facility use, we invite partners, researchers, and descendant communities to engage with these important materials.
