Facilities
Infrastructure For Interdisciplinary Exploration
At Sustainable Archaeology McMaster, cutting-edge laboratories and reference collections support archaeological research that integrates scientific analysis, material culture studies, and Indigenous perspectives.
These facilities are designed to provide researchers with the tools and expertise to process, analyze, and interpret archaeological materials, advancing both methodological innovation and ethical stewardship.
Archaeobotany & Lithic Reference Collections
With over a decade of development, our Archaeobotany Reference Collection offers a vast catalog of botanical samples, supporting the identification and interpretation of plant remains in archaeological contexts.
Our Lithic Reference Collection, developed over 15 years, comprises materials from diverse regions, including local cherts, Northeast and Midwest lithics, European flints, and other exotic specimens.
This collection provides an invaluable comparative framework for lithic sourcing and analysis.
Processing Lab: Preparing & Analyzing Materials
Designed exclusively for archaeological applications, our Processing Lab provides the space and specialized equipment to efficiently clean, sort, and analyze soils, sediments, faunal and floral materials, and artifacts.
Equipped with industrial sinks, exhaust hoods, and custom drying racks, the lab allows researchers to prepare materials for a wide range of scientific applications, including isotope analysis, micro-drilling, and milling for geochemical assessments.
Microscopy & Analytical Lab: High-Resolution Imaging & Artifact Examination
The Microscopy and Analytical Lab is outfitted with state-of-the-art microscopes and imaging tools, allowing researchers to produce high-resolution digital images and conduct detailed micro-artifact analyses.
With advanced microscopy equipment, including high-resolution stereomicroscopes, digital imaging systems, and precision microdrilling tools, this lab provides the necessary resources for specialized archaeological examinations and materials preparation.
