Introducing CRESS Fellow - Gerjan Altenburg

A PhD candidate in the Department of Religious Studies, Gerjan is especially interested in Buddhism and East Asian Religions. He is creating a series of infographics presenting a map of the intertexuality of some Buddhist monastic commentaries found within the Tibetan Buddhist Canon. Gerjan says that “this project will be helpful to scholars and translators working on Buddhist monastic literature in the Canon.” Gerjan is sponsored by Dr. Shayne Clarke.

A PhD candidate in the Department of Religious Studies, Gerjan is especially interested in Buddhism and East Asian Religions. His current dissertation research tackles administrative roles and their associate duties described in Indian Buddhist monastic literature. Gerjan also contributes to the Canadian Journal of Buddhist Studies News Blog and been compiling an extensive bibliography of films related to Buddhism to be posted soon to his website. Additionally, Gerjan has studied a variety of languages including Classic Tibetan, German, Ancient Greek, and Latin.
